Taipei embraces newly opened hostels with unique designs

In recent years, the number of foreign backpackers visiting Taiwan has increased steadily, leading to many newly established inexpensive hostels. In last year alone, 17 new hostels opened in Taipei. To compete for guests, hostel operators come up with novel designs and themes to create a unique accommodation experience.

The theme of this room is Interstellar Space and guests sleep in a specially designed capsule room.

The hostel had a soft opening just a while ago and 80 percent of the rooms have been reserved before April. Another hostel in Taipei’s popular Ximenting area is also seeing growing business.

The hostel is luring guests who are interested in creative design, such as this room inspired by shipping containers.

Potential business opportunities from budget travelers have boosted the number of new hostel establishments. In 2015 alone, 17 officially registered hostels opened in Taipei.

The market will slow down and reach a balance when escalating supply eventually exceeds demand.

Hostels and hotels don’t share the same clientele and offer different experiences. But both hostels and hotels may suffer from declining business as more than half of guests come from China as Beijing is rumored to restrict the number of individual Chinese travelers to Taiwan.
